A HAPPY PET IS A HAPPY PET OWNER!!

From time to time pet owners experience behavioral problems with their pets. They are annoying at the least and sometimes they can actually be dangerous to you and your family. These can be caused by underlying physical problems or diseases or they may be the result of environmental factors and/or lack of proper training. All behavioral issues, regardless of cause or severity , should not be ignored. They respond best to early and consistent treatment interventions. A good foundation for learning is puppy and kitten “kindergarten” or socialization classes. These lay the foundation for later learning for your pet and puppies and kittens exposed these classes grow up to be better adjusted adult pets. The longer behavioral problems are present the more engrained they become. Many problem behaviors can be corrected or at least modified to a more manageable level through a change in approach or, in other words, different training methods.

Dr. Walsh has a special interest in canine and feline behavior cases. He has completed a practitioner sabbatical in animal behavior through the Purdue University Veterinary Teaching Hospital Behavioral Medicine Department. He has incorporated many of their techniques into his practice including how his staff interacts with the patients during examinations and treatment situations. Every attempt is made to keep your pet as calm and relaxed as possible in order to make your visit the least stressful for you and your pet.

Many behavioral issues can be addressed through a behavioral exam consultation with Dr. Walsh. A thorough history, physical examination and appropriate laboratory testing is performed. Once a diagnosis has been established for your pet, a treatment plan is implemented and updated as necessary. Those animals in need of more intense intervention are readily referred to Purdue’s Behavioral Medicine Department. Dr. Walsh has collaborated with them and provided much of the follow-up information for those cases.
